Jing, from Techsmith, has been around for a year now. Even though I’m not an avid Jing user, I’m still glad they’ve stuck around for that long.
Jing was a project that allowed users to take screenshots and movies straight from their computer, then use FTP or Screencast to upload their recordings. There’s also an option to save whatever you caught to your computer (what I mostly use).
Jing is very user friendly. They provide a cute little yellow sun that docks itself (by default) at the top of your computer screen. If it gets in the way there, you can always drag it to some other obscure section of screen. It’s easy enough to use; just hover your cursor over the Jing sun, and the first arrow will show “Capture.” It then sort of ‘freezes’ your desktop like a blackened out screenshot, but you get to select where or what you want to capture with a cropping tool. You then select whether you want to take a screenshot or a live Desktop movie cast thing. Note that if you use the movie capture option, it also uses your microphone to record whatever noises you make. (Keys typing in the background is a little annoying, but tolerable.)
Overall, Jing is great to use when wanting to screenie something in a hurry. You don’t have to open Paint/Photoshop and paste, then save. You only need a matter of thirty seconds to save images or desktop movies, and save time by uploading directly after capturing. I personally like it because of it’s yellow theme, and ease of use (there’s a chance for you to put funny red arrows and highlighted text in your images).
Now that it’s a year old, Jing’s upgraded user accounts to having over 2GB of upload space! Enjoy Jinging, now with more chances to capture!
